Just a quick note to say that recent unrest in Bangkok has not affected us other than shutting a few Shopping Malls here and there, but it’s too hot to go shopping anyway!

I have begun to develop and build (with the help of various lone inventors, military technicians, circuit bending specialists, cabinet makers, and antiquarians, dotted around obscure corners of the globe) the musical instruments I plan to use on Time Machines II – Perhaps it should be called Time Machines Legacy, or something similar, since it will use technology not invented when we released Time Machines. I know this (being musical) is not strictly Sacred-Profane news but its likely some or all of the instruments will end up available from the Sacred-Profane Store in future times, so here it is…

A Moment to Reflect

This is the first object I will be offering through the Sacred-Profane store, although it’s more of a Set actually.

The Moment Set

The Set consists of a gold frame made to fit the cards we sent out at Christmas, with an additional (optional) tarnished brass lotus candle or incense holder, further an embroidered silk box containing various kinds of incense, candles, etc. and with the first 23 Sets sold, an additional 6 images to add to your collection.

Incidentally I will be posting a guide to the sources of all the card images, what their significance is or why I particularly like or revere them soon. It is not (and never will be) just because I think they are cute.

The back of the frame will carry a signed and dated Provenance Label with Holographic Tamper-proof sticker, (the latter of which, we are picking up tomorrow), so they should be ready to start shipping this week. Incidentally the back of the frame has a recessed section the same size as the credit card images themselves so can be used to store your collection of cards – we will be giving away more to our regular customers, several times a year.

Come to that, if you wanted to store anything else small, discretely, covered by brown-paper parcel tape (the kind you lick) this might be the perfect place!

Why Sacred-Profane?

Actually if you look in dictionaries or Wiki, the meaning of these two words are often defined as just being the antithesis of each other – Sacred – a word that describes things of a Spiritual nature or that are particularly Venerated, respected or worshiped by a certain culture, and Profane – the opposite, the mundane, the un-respectable.

The subtext in the Christian West, at least, is that Profane things are rude, blasphemous, morally unsound, i.e. of an animalistic, bestial nature, to be abjured.

By contrast, my view is that in fact spirituality is often found in the most rude of places (and by this I mean rude in both senses, simple and sexual).

I believe that that the moral attitude that continues to prevail in the West, despite all the seeming Liberation movements of the the last 50 years – that the physical needs and processes of millions of people (esp. when they differ from the majority, in style or preference) are intrinsically “bad” or a reason for guilt, or mistrust, is incorrect, non-sensical and damaging to the progress of mankind toward wisdom, toward enlightenment.

There are good people and there are bad people (Why, is a whole ‘nother matter’!)

Also, some are spiritual people and some atheists. This seems to me to be self-evident, the world over, regardless of nationality or national religion, and it has nothing to do with a person’s present circumstances, age, education or occupation…

It’s true I have always found situations where the Sacred and Profane go hand in hand, the most affecting, the most moving, maybe because they are are so “unexpected”, maybe because the contradiction somehow makes the Spiritual aspect more powerful…

This website will feature examples of this kind of contradiction wherever I find them, from East London canal-sides, to South American favelas, to Asian go-go bars or gas stations or Temple grounds.

I am far from understanding why I feel the way I do about these things, but as an artist, as a human being, I feel I need to make them available to you.

Peter Jackson, director of the fabulous Lord of the Rings movies, was asked the other day if his new film of The Lovely Bones was similar to the book, and he replied to the effect that movies have to simplify, but he had cried when he read the book, and so obviously he had to keep those parts of the story where he cried, most crucially, and to build the rest around that! A man after my own heart

I hope you will find the ideas worthy of consideration, and the objects, or pictures in some way useful, or helpful, in your own personal path towards Awareness.

A Moment to Reflect

If you bought anything from the Threshold House store recently, you should have received a set of 3 credit-card sized images from us around Christmas time.

We intend to continue giving these away free, from time to time, as a token of our appreciation for your interest. Not all of the pictures were taken by me, but they all have a special resonance for me, a Power of some kind…

Pictures that you could look at, and begin to feel a Change of State, much as I hope you feel, when you listen to my music.

All too often, people use pictures to show off to their friends, or reinforce their self-image or ego, and rarely pay much attention to them – even see them – once they are on the wall.

By contrast, I would like to help restore the “special-ness” of pictures, their Power, and help you to be able to derive, even tangibly feel the benefit… To Change your State, from agitation to calmness, from harsh to gentle, from Manic to Meditative, as you wish…

The first item available from the Sacred-Profane Store, is a handmade frame, made to take a single one of these cards, with an attached tarnished-brass lotus incense or night-light holder. Each frame will also have a new free set of cards, limited to an edition of 23, for you to collect and choose from.

If you have a quiet corner somewhere at home, preferably with a chair near to your chosen framed picture, consider just sitting and taking a Moment to Reflect…

In Russian folklore, it is common knowledge that one should always sit quietly for a moment before starting any journey, or it will be beset by problems. I have seen the evidence of this for myself. I believe it to be true, and what is any new day, but a new journey?
